Welcome From the Chair

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Washington. In this Department, you will find that our world-class staff, nurses, trainees, researchers, and physicians are all aligned in a single goal: to put our patients first. From the moment you arrive at our Department, you will be cared for as family.

Our Department is comprised of national and international leaders in cancer care. The academic mission of our Department is to pioneer the treatments of tomorrow through innovative research programs, while delivering state-of-the-art cancer care to our patients today.

We have the most comprehensive array of technologies in radiation treatment available for the care of our patients. From high-resolution, image-guided IMRT, SBRT, gamma-knife, high- and low-dose rate brachytherapy to VMAT, our clinical teams deliver the cutting-edge in X-ray treatments. We are also the only center in the world equipped with high-precision pencil beam scanning protons and neutrons, two forms of particle radiation therapy that allow our clinicians to push the boundaries of cancer care beyond the capabilities of standard X-ray treatment for our patients.

Our prestigious residency training programs in Medical Physics and Radiation Oncology educate and train the future leaders in the field. Our faculty are actively engaged in serving the educational mission of the Department through the development of comprehensive didactic programs and “hands on” clinical training that is delivered by accomplished educators and experienced clinicians. For all segments of the learning continuum from graduate/medical students to physics/radiation oncology residents to advanced post-graduate fellows, our training programs provide the foundation needed to achieve even the most ambitious professional and career goals.

Our clinical mission is to improve cancer care everywhere. From the development of global health initiatives that provide advanced radiation treatment in low-resource environments to leveraging radiation as a tool for unlocking the tremendous potential of cancer immunotherapy, our physicians, researchers, and staff are defining the frontier of cancer care in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. We invite you to learn about our expansive clinical trial portfolio which brings the discoveries made by our researchers at the laboratory bench to the bedside of our patients and helps us shape the therapeutic paradigms of tomorrow.

It is my sincere privilege to serve as Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and I welcome you to learn more about the dedicated professionals that work collaboratively to deliver the very best in cancer care anywhere.
